What’s the # of turns out from seated for the black knob(idle) on the ‘88 740GLE~ LH-Jetronic2.4 throttle body
The black knob is on the bottom of the throttle body & has an allen wrench type hole in the top.
The Haynes manual suggests using it to fine tune the idle but list no initial setting.
I have it set to where it’s always been after i cleaned the throttle body but i’d like to know if there’s an initial factory setting OR steps to properly set the knob to provide optimum performance from the throttle body.
It’s just a threaded nylon knob that screws into a addition to the throttle body. the car runs w/ the knob screwed in all the way as well as out all the way.
I do know that a turbo model volvo i have doesn’t have this piece on the throttle body.
If someone out there has one with the knob on it; please count the # of complete turns from fully seated & let me know.
The further out it is set, the more i hear a “shwooshing” sound from the throttle body.
Please, No answers that begin with “I think” or “Maybe”.
first order of business is to locate a 2 wire connector [located on left inner fender area] one wire will be, BLUE-WHITE the other will be pink [pink wire is for O2 sensor testing and if grounded [earthed] will damage the ecu.]
jumper the BLUE-WHITE wire to ground with the engine idling
at normal operating tempature [this completly closes the constant idle motor] now turn the black screw in or out to set base idle speed of 700 rpm [tolerance + or- of 20 rpm.
HINT use a hand held tach of known good quality [do not rely on the dash tach] if it has one.
NOTE after a throttle body cleaning i will seat the screw and then back it out 3 full turns as a starting point [this gets me in the proper time zone] this will not be tolerated as an acceptable adjustment this meerly keeps the engine from stalling while the idle motor is closed.
